Lightning LS-1 is all that the high performance Light Sport aircraft should be.
Naturally, when you hear "LSA", high performance doesn't automatically come to mind, but if you want to cruise as fast as the rule allows, climb at 1500fpm solo, 1200fpm at MTOW of 1320lb and know that the best looking airplane on the tarmac is yours - you've come to the right place.
Construction
Lightning is constructed entirely of aircraft grade components. Composite elements are manufactured using modern techniques such as vacuum infusion and resin transfer molding to create a sturdy airplane while keeping the weight down. All welded and machined components are built by aircraft welders with over 30 years experience in the industry. AN hardware throughout, Matco Wheels and brakes, and components from Mcfairlane Aviation and Windshield Inc. round out the top quality materials. With the exception of the Australian Jabiru engine, all components of the LS-1 are manufactured in the USA.
Powerplant
Why have less, when you can have more? Lighting LS-1 is designed and built around Jabiru's powerful 3300 aircraft engine. Air cooled, horizontally opposed six cylinder engine with a displacement of over 200 cubic inches and a direct drive crankshaft - this little beauty has over 120HP on tap for performance rarely matched in a Light Sport aircraft.
Testing
The structure of the original E-AB Lightning was tested extensively for symmetrical and asymmetrical flight limit loads of +5G and -3G at 1425lbs. The ultimate failure loads to +10G, torsional testing of the fuselage and tail, load testing of welded parts round out the strength testing profile.
In April 2009, the Lightning design effortlessly passed the ASTM standard F2245 requirements for the Light Sport Aircraft. The airframe design for the LS-1 model has not been changes and that means that when operating within the LSA requirement of +4G -2G, and at a lower maximum take-off weight of 1320lbs, you've got yourself one strong aircraft.
Reach out
Cruise speeds and fuel burns fall in the 120kts range at under 5GPH respectively. A payload of up to 500lbs is available, and if equipped with long range 30 gallon fuel tanks, the airplane can take you over 660nm with VFR reserves. Even with standard tanks, you can still reach out and touch some place 500nm away with VFR reserves.
Enjoy your flight
Quick to respond, eager to turn, anxious to accelerate... this airplane exhibits the strength, speed and agility that an airplane that dares to be called Lightning should. The control is stable, light and intuitive. In the pattern Lightning slows unbelievably well to a touchdown speed of below 50 knots. Slow speed handling in the pattern is solid and informative.
Our Lightning Flight Training Program will ensure the smooth transition to this sturdy yet very responsive aircraft and guarantee a fun and safe flying experience.
